Atanu Das outperforms Korean legends Oh
Atanu Das got off to a slow start against Korea’s former Olympic champion Oh, hitting 2 8s with his first two shots. Notably, the 39-year-old Korean legend had recently won the Men’s Team gold medal in Tokyo.
Atanu, on the other hand, handled the strain admirably, tying the second and third sets with a string of 7 arrows in 9.
Atanu grabbed his first ten in the fourth set of the match, and he did so to win the fourth set 27-22. Oh scored a 7 for the first time in his career.
Atanu’s perfect ten brought the game to a dramatic conclusion.
As Deepika supported Atanu on the field in Tokyo, the anxiety was palpable. There were a few pieces of wisdom flying around in the stands as well. And Atanu nailed the final set, with scores of 10, 9, and 9. It was matched by Oh, and the game ended in a 5-5 tie.
Oh went first in the shoot-off and hit a 9. And Atanu needed a ten to win the game, which he got.
Earlier in the day, Atanu survived another nail-biter, this time in the Round of 64 against Yu-Cheng Deng of Chinese Taipei, which he won 6-4.
After the failures of the team events earlier this week, Atanu has bounced back with vigor. In the Ranking Round, Atanu, the highest-ranked Indian male recurve archer, came in second to Pravin Jadhav and missed out on a spot for the Mixe Team. In the Men’s Team event, he had a bad day as India was eliminated early.
