Deepika Kumari, the world number one female archer, qualified for the quarterfinals by defeating Ksenia Perova of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) 6-5 in a shoot-off. Avinash Sable of India finished seventh in Heat 2 of the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 8:18:12, breaking his own National Record of 8:20:20. Meanwhile, Indian shooters continue to struggle, as Manu Bhaker and Rahi Sarnobat both failed to qualify for the Women’s 25m Air Pistol event.

Manu received a total of 582 points, while Rahi received only 573. Simranjit Kaur Baatth of India was defeated by Sudaporn Seesondee of Thailand by a 5-0 unanimous decision and did not win a single round in their Women’s Lightweight Round of 16 fight.

Lovlina advanced to the quarterfinals after receiving a bye in the first round and defeating Germany’s Nadine Apetz, a fighter over 12 years her senior, 3-2.
