First-ever full-time fellowships for female PhD students at IIT-Roorkee

The SAKUNTALA (Scheme for Aspirants of Knowledge Under Talent Advancement) Fellowship was launched by IIT Roorkee. This fellowship is only for female students who have completed a BTech, BE, BArch, or BDes.

Key Highlight:

  • Women studying engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IT-R) can now apply for a fellowship called SAKUNTALA (Scheme for Aspirants of Knowledge Under Talent Advancement) that will help them pay for college.
  • A new project will give them the chance to get a PhD in the field they want to study.
  • The fellowship will start at IIT-R in the fall and will last for five years.
  • Stipends: In the first two years, students will get Rs 31,000, while in the next three years, they will get Rs 35,000.
  • Sakuntala is a first-of-its-kind project to help female students who want to be engineers.

India’s Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IT-R) has started the SAKUNTALA (Scheme for Aspirants of Knowledge Under Talent Development) Fellowship to help female engineering students get more funds, which will help them get more money for college. Under the initiative, they will be able to get a Ph.D. in the field they want to study. The fellowship will start at IIT-R this fall and will last for five years. Stipends: In the first two years, students will get Rs 31,000, and in the next three years, they will get Rs 35,000.

This fellowship’s benefits will go to women who have or are enrolled in a course from one of the four centrally-funded technical institutes (CFTIs). If a student wants to get the fellowship, they must also have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 8.5 or more out of 10 (out of 12). If you want to apply for a fellowship, you don’t need to have a GATE, CEED, or National Level exam score. Individual interviews will be used to choose the people who will get the fellowship. Also, there is no limit on the number of students who can get help from the fellowship. The stipend will be given to all qualified candidates who pass the interview and can work full time.

The 52nd meeting of the IIT-R research committee took place on November 30, 2021, and the proposal for the fellowship was put on the table at that meeting. Later, on December 9, the panel gave it the go-ahead. Sakuntala is a first-of-its-kind project that aims to help female students who want to work in engineering. This will help many female graduates from CFTIs who want to go to college but can’t because of other reasons. One of the deans at IIT Roorkee, Professor Apurba Kumar Sharma, said that a fellowship like this could help close the gender gap.

Professor AK Chaturvedi, the institute director, said, “IIT-Roorkee has taken this step to increase the number of women research scholars in our engineering departments.” This is what he said. Our goal is for the fellowship to make a visible difference.
