An Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) professor and his colleagues have built an artificial intelligence (AI)-based software ecosystem that translates scientific and technical content from English to Hindi and numerous other Indian languages.

This program, Project Udaan, which was unveiled on Tuesday at a virtual event, can translate engineering textbooks and learning materials in one-sixth. It would take a team of domain and linguistic specialists to work manually.

“The Indian Constitution requires every state and local authority to provide adequate facilities for instruction in the mother tongue to children belonging to linguistic minorities at the primary stage of education,” said Professor Ganesh Ramakrishnan, IIT-B chair professor, department of computer science and engineering.

“Project Udaan” will aid in translating scientific and technical jargon into languages other than English, which might benefit students studying engineering and technology degrees, he said.

Project Udaan is a donation-based project with a full-circle ecosystem that aids in translation. “We have built a very sophisticated multilingual OCR (optical character recognition) technology and many post-editing tools, and we now have access to machine-readable digital bilingual dictionaries.” As a result, rather than transliterating English phrases, we can employ appropriate scientific and technical terms accessible in Hindi,” Ramakrishnan noted.

However, Gopakumaran Thampi, principal of Thadomal Shahani Engineering College in Bandra, who was not engaged in the effort, stated that the concept is based on the new National Education Policy (NEP) regulations supporting regional languages, the software’s application may be limited. “There has rarely been a scenario when pupils were unable to understand scientific words because of the community from which they originated. And, while it may help certain students, what will these kids do once they graduate and enter the job market? There would be no software to assist them,” Thampi explained.

The IIT-B team hopes to translate 500 engineering texts into Hindi in one year and 15 Indian languages in three years through donations.
