  • The new labs are the Battery Research Laboratory, Charging Infrastructure Laboratory, and Automotive Health Monitoring (AHM) laboratory.
  • They conduct their studies at the Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART) (C ART) CART focuses on battery-powered electric vehicles, hybrid electric cars, energy storage, and alternative energy sources.

There are three new electric vehicle laboratories at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi inaugurated. Batteries, Charging Infrastructure, and Automotive Health Monitoring (AHM) are the three new labs at CART, now home to CART’s Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART).

According to a press release from IIT Delhi, the Battery Research Laboratory is outfitted with cutting-edge equipment for testing batteries at the cell, module, and pack levels. In addition to the batteries, the battery management system (BMS) in a master-slave configuration is tested to check for any faulty cell condition, it said.

Automotive noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) testing are performed in the AHM lab, which has state-of-the-art equipment. In addition to vibration analysis, current monitoring, noise monitoring, infrared thermography, and acoustic emission, the team will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) for fault detection (IoT).

According to the statement, the Charging Infrastructure Laboratory has a Battery Test System, a Regenerative AC Emulator, and a Charging Discovery System (CDS)

Research at IIT Delhi’s CART focuses on battery-powered electric vehicles, hybrid electric cars, energy storage, and alternative energy sources, as well as self-driving and networked vehicles.

IIT Delhi Director Prof V Ramgopal Rao said, “CART at IIT Delhi has collaborated with various automotive industries in the country and working to solve technological challenges faced by them,” during the inauguration. There will be many new cutting-edge technologies available to the industry due to CART’s new research facilities.

“The CDS is used as a universal charging infrastructure, which enables to test Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE)” (EVSE). Electric vehicles and chargers can be thoroughly tested in the laboratory’s extensive charging infrastructure testing capabilities.”

Aside from improving sound quality, the team is also working on identifying and reducing the sources of automotive noise, as well as developing acoustical materials from natural resources, bio-waste, and recycled materials,” he said.
