Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras are working to improve road safety in Tamil Nadu with data-driven solutions. To help with this, the Centre of Excellence for Human Factors and Safety Science at RBG Labs, IIT Madras, hosted a one-day workshop on Wednesday in conjunction with the National Health Mission on formulating an action plan.
Diverse road safety stakeholders, including police, health, transportation, education departments, and local self-government, participated in the session. Other attendees included rural development officials and members of the medical community.
The workshop’s conclusions will be put to good use in developing a targeted action plan and serving as a policy recommendation for lowering the number of people killed or injured in car accidents in Tamil Nadu.
Ma Subramanian, Minister of Health, Medical Education, and Family Welfare, delivered the following message to the workshop: “This is the first of many workshops using design thinking to strategize about road safety. This joint session of knowledge exchange across all of Tamil Nadu’s road safety stakeholders will pave the ground for the state’s road safety policy to continue to improve.”
A Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) aim of decreasing road accident deaths by half will be accomplished in Tamil Nadu by 2020, making it the first state in India and the only governed territory worldwide to have done so. According to an official report, the number of people killed in car accidents is expected to rise steadily in 2021.
On December 31, 2020, a strategic team of TN road safety stakeholders was assembled to develop a short- and long-term action plan for enhancing road safety in Tennessee.
