Robots for the disabled are being developed by IIT Madras and a motion technology company

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is working with Portescap, a motion technology company, making robotics for rehabilitation more affordable. People from Christian Medical College (CMC Vellore) and TTK’s Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development are also part of the project.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is working with Portescap, a motion technology company, making robotics for rehabilitation more affordable. People from Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore are also part of the CSR project.

This project, led by the Office of Institutional Advancement at IIT Madras, will help people with arm impairments make an innovative rehabilitation robot called Arm Rehabilitation Robot (AREBO), which will help them move their arms again.

AREBO is a six-degrees-of-freedom robot that helps people with neurological and musculoskeletal problems, like stroke, arthritis, cerebral palsy, and Parkinson’s disease, learn how to move their shoulder and elbow joints. The design of this robot makes it easy to connect to either the left or right arm of a person and allows them to train their arm safely.

Sujatha Srinivasan, the head of the TTK Centre for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) at IIT Madras, and Sivakumar Balasubramanian, the head of CMC Vellore, are behind these new ideas. They hope to make a big difference in people’s lives with disabilities. They are also a way for therapists to watch how their patients are doing and plan their therapy accordingly.

R2D2 has a lot of experience making and selling functional and affordable devices for people who have trouble moving. CMC has a lot of experience in bioengineering and treating people who have problems moving. Research and development costs paid for by CSR support are important to achieving the goal of putting high-quality devices on the market at low prices.

Balasubramanian said this about the project’s goals: “AREBO is the result of our efforts to make rehabilitation robots easier to use, which is important for everyday clinical use.” There are hopes that this collaboration will lead to a simple, small, easy-to-use, and safe robot that can be used in many clinical trials soon. It will be important to figure out how this device fits into normal clinical practice and what it can do for patients and doctors before this device goes on the market.
