On Monday, India’s Yogesh Kathuniya won silver in the men’s Discus throw (F56) event at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics in Japan, with a best throw of 44.38m in the final. Kathuniya was only beaten by Batista dos Santos Claudiney of Brazil, who won the gold medal with a throw of 45.59 meters.
Kathuniya began with a foul, but then threw a 42.84, followed by a 43.55 toss. But he reserved his best for the last throw, which he threw 44.38 meters. India has now won five medals at the Tokyo Paralympics.
Kathuniya, a 24-year-old who earned a bronze medal at the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai 2019, increased India’s medal count to four in the major event.
Three competitors brought home medals on Sunday, which was National Sports Day across the country. The day began with Bhavinaben Patel, a top paddler, winning silver in the women’s singles table tennis class 4 event.
Later same day, high jumper Nishad Kumar won silver in the T47 event with a best jump of 2.06m, breaking an Asian record. Vinod Kumar won a bronze medal in the Discus throw F52 category shortly after. He, too, created a new Asian mark with a throw of 19.91 meters.
