The SMITA (Smart Materials and Innovative Textile Applications) Research Lab at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has been transformed into a Smart Textiles Centre of Excellence.
To work on smart and functional textiles employing developing materials and process technologies that can directly help the country’s textile industry, IIT Delhi established the SMITA research lab center of excellence in smart textiles.
The center’s primary objective is to:
Nanomaterials, nanofibres, and newly created nanomaterials are being used to develop highly functional and high-performance textiles for various applications.
Electronic-Textiles, or wearable textiles, are currently in development.
Textile research and development for medical uses.
India’s textile industry is significant because, after agriculture, it employs the majority of the country’s workforce. Textiles have a considerable impact on the economy because of their use both domestically and abroad. There is, however, severe rivalry in other low-cost producing countries from other countries in the garment market, as stated in the IIT Delhi statement.
To date, the SMITA Research Lab at IIT Delhi has developed several novel technologies that are being used for the first time in the country. These include nanomaterials-based antibacterial, antiviral, self-cleaning finishes, nanofiber-based nostril filters (also known as Nasofilters), and automobile filters.
When it comes to enhancing IIT Delhi’s effect on the technical textile domain and accelerating innovations in this critical field, V Ramgopal Rao, Director of IIT Delhi, said: “IIT Delhi has turned its SMITA Research Lab into a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Smart Textiles. “The CoE has brought together researchers from various fields to produce innovative smart textiles for the future.”
