The premier institute will launch a Bachelor of Design program.
The Department of Design at IIT-Delhi will offer a new Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) course beginning in the academic year 2022-23, the institute said on Monday. The Board of Governors has authorized the four-year program, which will begin with 20 seats and be open to students of all specialties.
V. Ramgopal Rao, Director of IIT-Delhi, stated that this is the first time that IIT-Delhi will admit undergraduate students for the B.Des degree from backgrounds other than Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. “We anticipate that students graduating with a B.Des. degree from IIT-Delhi will take up leadership roles in industry, academia, government, consultancy, and entrepreneurship over time,” Mr. Rao added.
Bridging the gap
He went on to say that the B.Des. program, as well as other design programs in the works at IIT-Delhi, will help bridge the large demand-supply gap for skilled design experts, which our country requires to excel as a creative economy.
According to P.V. Madhusudhan Rao, Head of Department of Design at IIT-Delhi, the program is intended to generate industry-ready and socially conscious design experts capable of addressing some of our society’s/great country’s concerns.
According to the institute, students for the B.Des. program will be admitted based on Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design ranks, for which registration has already begun. IIT-Delhi has been offering a Master of Design (M.Des.) program since 1994, and it also offers a PhD program with over 35 research scholars currently enrolled.
