On Wednesday, Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, revealed that the government plans to build science museums across the country to instill a love of science, especially among children and the next generation.
G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Culture, Tourism, and DoNER witnessed the signing of an MoU between the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the National Council for Science Museums (NCSM), at which time Singh was speaking.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Science and Technology, science museums will be established in selected CSIR facilities as part of the MoU to encourage scientific curiosity and knowledge among the general public.
And Singh urged for adopting a scientific mindset to deal with the problems of the twenty-first century. He said that the current pandemic highlighted the need for more public awareness concerning science and scientific thought.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent speech at the 76th United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Modi had pointed to the threat of regressive thinking and extremism facing the world, the minister reiterated that science-based, rational and progressive thinking should form the basis of development and to strengthen a science-based approach, India promotes experience-based learning.
The new CSIR initiative to set up virtual labs in partnership with IIT-Bombay for school students, as desired by the Prime Minister in the CSIR Society Meeting in 2020, is highly laudable, Singh said, as he welcomed the move by CSIR and NCSM to set up a museum within NPL to showcase the technologies and interventions developed by CSIR over the last eight decades.
According to Reddy, when it comes to augmenting national science education and establishing a culture of science and technology, science centers are widely acknowledged to play a vital role.
