Frugal manufacturing by IIT Madras leads the way to sustainable development

Frugal manufacturing can be very important to the growth of India because it will make it possible to make things that work well at a low price. Goods will be made with only the resources that are needed to make them. At IIT Madras, Dr. Balkrishna C Rao is an Associate Professor of Engineering Design.

Frugality will help cut down on the number of products wasted during production because only the necessary resources will be used to make the goods. Dr. Balkrishna C Rao is an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Design at IIT Madras. He is one of the first people to study frugal engineering worldwide.

As part of his research, Balkrishna C. Rao, an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Design at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Madras), said, “Manufacturers want to keep their costs down to stay profitable. The conventional way to do this has been to increase the scale of production.” It’s becoming clearer that we need to be more frugal when we buy things because of things like climate change, the loss of biodiversity, and the rise in population. The manufacturing philosophy has changed from “bigger is better” to “more frugal is better,” and zero waste products and processes have been getting more attention in the last few years.

In a statement from IIT Madras, it says that they don’t have a lot of space for people “Frugal manufacturing, which is part of frugal engineering, aims to make good-quality parts with fewer low-cost steps. FM’s best-case scenario would be for a single low-cost manufacturing process to make a part or product with precise dimensions and great surface features in a single pass, with no waste.”

“The new “cradle-to-cradle” concept of sustainability promoted by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the National Academy of Engineering is called “FM,” and it’s all about making the manufacturing industry more environmentally friendly and competitive,” it said.

Dr. Balkrishna Rao has also come up with a way to measure how cheap a product is to make. This is called the “factor of frugality,” and it can be used to measure how cheap a product is to make. He has used this measure to determine how cheap manufacturing processes like casting, additive manufacturing, sheet processing, powder metallurgy, and more are.
