Police have filed a complaint against Munmun Dutta after a ‘racist’ remark was made.
Actor Munmun Dutta has been charged with using a derogatory term in a viral video in Mumbai. Among his most popular television shows is “Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah.” Her case has been filed under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
Police said that the actor used a word for a specific community in a social media comment she made on May 9 about makeup. A video of the video went viral on social media platforms.
“A case has been registered against Dutta on May 26 based on a complaint lodged by Naresh Bohit (40), who is a political party worker and community leader,” a police official said. She lives within the jurisdiction of the Amboli police station, so her complaint was forwarded there. On Wednesday, the actor was charged with a crime after an investigation.
Manoj Parmar, the president of the Akhil Bharatiya Balai Mahasangh, had earlier filed a complaint, and a police complaint was registered against Dutta under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the official stated. Parmar complained that Dutta’s use of a “racist” term was offensive to Scheduled Castes, particularly the Valmiki community.
Following the blog post on social media in which the derogatory term was allegedly heard, Dutta was also arrested in Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.
“Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah” actress Dutta, who portrays Babita in the film, later apologized for her controversial remarks. An apology from the actress was posted on social media on May 10.
Munmun Dutta had drawn flak on social media as soon as she uploaded the video. On May 10, she uploaded an apology video. She said, “This is about a video that I posted yesterday wherein one word used by me has been misinterpreted. It was never said with the intent of insult, intimidate, humiliate or hurt anyone’s feelings. Because of my language barrier, I was genuinely misinformed about the meaning of the word. Once I was made aware of its meaning, I immediately took part down. I have the utmost respect for every single person from every caste, creed, or gender and acknowledge their immense contribution to our society or nation, the actor wrote. I sincerely would like to apologize to every single person who the usage of the word has unintentionally hurt, and I sincerely regret the same”.
In the past couple of weeks, Randeep Hooda, singer and host Aditya Narayan, and actress Yuvika Chaudhary have received severe backlash on social media due to their casteist slurs.
