Researchers develop catalytic materials to enable artificial photosynthesis to produce high-purity hydrogen.

IIT Jodhpur, faculty members Rakesh Sharma and his team of researchers, including Ph.D. students Kiran Shejale, Devika Laishram, Bhagirath Saini and postdoctoral, Krishnapriya, developed a catalytic system for producing hydrogen from wastewater and other organic matter using the sunlight. Researchers from IIT Jodhpur have used natural sunlight to produce high-purity hydrogen and oxygen using a highly recyclable catalyst based on low-cost, simple transition metals.

A research team at IIT Indore develops catalysts that can be used to produce high-purity hydrogen from wastewater. Researchers have used more than 100 different catalysts to find those that produce high oxygen production under sunlight. The catalysts can produce high-purity hydrogen from wastewater and other saline and brackish water, and they are very easily recyclable and can be used many times.

This process produces hydrogen quickly and cheaply using sunlight available in a broad spectrum of wavelengths. It does not need an expensive energy source to generate hydrogen. This process, which produces hydrogen at low costs and with high purities, could be important for using hydrogen fuel directly in vehicles, enabling fossil fuels to be avoided and thereby preventing pollution.
