Researchers at IIT Madras develop white light emitters for LEDs awarded SERB-Technology Translation Award

Applications using white light emitting diodes (LEDs). It was recently awarded the ‘SERB-Technology Translation Award’ by the Indian Government. Communications Materials, a prestigious peer-reviewed international journal published by the Nature group, published the findings of this study.

Key Highlight:

  • Researchers at IIT Madras have patented their invention, which recently won the Government of India’s ‘SERB-Technology Translation Award’
  • White light can only be produced by using special techniques such as coating blue LEDs with yellow phosphor or combining three different colors of LEDs.
  • The search for materials that emit white light directly, instead of using indirect techniques that waste energy, has spanned the globe.

It was recently awarded the ‘SERB-Technology Translation Award’ by the Indian Government.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras Scientists have developed white light emitting diodes (LEDs) for use in various fields. The inability of conventional LED materials to emit white light has prompted a worldwide search for materials that can emit white light directly rather than using these inefficient indirect techniques.

According to a press release, researchers at IIT Madras have patented their invention, which recently won the Government of India’s ‘SERB-Technology Translation Award .’ according to a press release.

The study’s findings were published in the prestigious peer-reviewed International journal Communications Materials, a journal member of the Nature family.

In lighting and display applications, energy-efficient LEDs have replaced inefficient incandescent lamps. However, white LEDs are a relatively new development, even though LEDs have long been available in a wide range of colors.

A white light can only be produced by using special techniques such as coating blue LEDs with yellow phosphor or combining three different colors of LEDs. The search for materials that emit white light directly, instead of using indirect techniques that waste energy, has spanned the globe.

Assistant Professor Aravind Kumar Chandiran of the IIT Madras Department of Chemical Engineering and Professor Ranjit Kumar Nanda B of the IIT Madras Department of Physics headed the study.
