Ex-CBI chief M Nageswara Rao’s ‘excellent riddance’ post on Swami Agnivesh’s death sparks row; Twitter pulls down tweet

New Delhi: M Nageswara Rao, an ex IPS officer and a previous CBI Director, has triggered a debate over his “exceptional riddance” tweet on the death of Swami Agnivesh, who passed away on Friday (September 11, 2020).

The tweet which is no longer used since it broke the Twitter Rules checked out, “Exceptional riddance @swamiagnivesh. You were an anti-Hindu putting on saffron clothing. You did big damage to Hinduism. I am ashamed that you were born as a Telugu Brahmin. Lion in sheep clothes. My grievance versus Yamaraj is why did he wait this long.”

Ever since Rao tweeted this, he has been questioned over his ideology, the posts he kept in the past, and how he can celebrate somebody’s death. A historian wrote, “You are a disgrace. Can you envision what all you must have done as a law enforcement officer? Abusing the dead may be Hindutva however is certainly not Hinduism. Better late than never. Get yourself treated.”
Rao, who has held his ground ever since has been continuously responding to the criticism he’s facing. Earlier in the day, he tweeted, “Bedrock of democracy is OPPONENT, which Voltaire properly said: “I may not agree with what you state, however, I will secure to the death your right to state it.” However, of late, it is honored more in breach due to increasing intolerance of dissent, which is the genuine threat to democracy anywhere.”

Rao also specified that he does not think in caste and protests casteism, which is destructive Hinduism.

” I am a Telugu, Hindu & Indian, totally in no particular series,” read his tweet. Rao, while responding to a message which stated that his tweet is” in bad taste, “wrote, “Why do we commemorate as celebrations the day’s savages were dead? Due to the truth that they’re insects destroying society & their death is a cause for the event. It was also to warn individuals not to patronize the bad. Hinduism avoids अपात्र दानं & misplaced empathy as they mess up both the provider & the sympathizer.”

Twitter is now divided among several civil servants, historians, social activists, and other netizens over Rao’s tweet.
