Key Highlight:

  • The Shivani Centre for the Nurture and Re-Integration of Hindustani and Other Indian Languages and the Chandrakanta Kesavan Centre for Energy Policy and Climate Solutions have been officially launched at IIT Kanpur.
  • The Shivani Center aims to integrate students from Hindi and other Indian Language backgrounds into the social and academic atmosphere of the university.
  • The ‘Chandrakanta Kesavan Centre for Energy Policy and Climate Solutions’ aims to help India meet the Paris Accords’ goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

At IIT Kanpur, two important research and learning centers have been officially launched: the Shivani Centre for the Nurture and Re-Integration of Hindustani and Other Indian Languages and the Chandrakanta Kesavan Centre for Energy Policy and Climate Solutions.

To benefit the institute’s alumni, both centers have received substantial grants.

Muktesh “Mickey” Pant, a famous IIT Kanpur graduate and founder of the Micky and Vinita Charitable Foundation, has donated $1 million to the Shivani Center, which aims to integrate students from Hindi and other Indian Language backgrounds into the social and academic atmosphere of the university.

Academic resources (STEM content, textbooks, references, and digital tools) in languages other than English will also be created at the center and tools to make Hindi and other Indian languages (OILs) easier to utilize on digital platforms. According to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, all students of Hindi or OILs background shall be integrated into the institute seamlessly.

‘Chandrakanta Kesavan Centre for Energy Policy and Climate Solutions’ was established with the generous contribution of distinguished IIT Kanpur alumnus Sudhakar Kesavan, former chairman and CEO of ICF International Inc., to help India develop, adapt and implement technologies to reduce emissions and grow sustainably in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement.

Carbon neutrality is a goal that this center will spearhead. A low- and eventually zero-carbon campus testbed will be showcased at IIT Kanpur due to this move. This will include research into power use, conservation and management (mainly for lighting and cooling), mobility or transportation, water and waste recycling, and policy intervention and implementation. There will be various projects that graduate and undergraduate students can participate in as a result of this activity.

In addition, this will give the center a definite goal as it begins its activities. Will make IIT Kanpur more prominent in the endeavor to help India meet the Paris Accords’ goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Having IIT Kanpur’s real-world experience in achieving carbon neutrality will assist in establishing credibility for the national endeavor.
