Colleges have been told by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to put the full text of their Ph.D. theses on Shodhganga on their websites. According to the official notice, this will help get accurate information on how many Ph.D. students in India have graduated. It will also help make a resource of research done in India that is useful. This will make it even easier for people to find and store Indian doctoral theses, says the notice. This is done by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) every year. They use the National Institutional Ranking Framework to rank universities and colleges (NIRF). According to a notice, the number of Ph.D. students who graduated will be one of the sub-parameters used to rank HEls under “Graduation Outcomes” of the NIRF, which ranks universities based on their graduation rates.
To get the full text of a student’s Ph.D. thesis in Shodhganga, UGC has asked each college to do what needs to be done to get the text there. Repository for India Ranking 2023 will be used to get the number of Ph.D. students who graduated in 2019, 2020, and 2021. “Shodhganga is a place where you can find full-text copies of theses and dissertations that have been written. A website called Shodhganga will make it easier to get accurate information about how many Ph.D. students have graduated if the full text of their theses is put on the site. A lot of good research in India will also be made possible. Centrally run digital repositories will make it easier for people to find and archive Indian doctoral theses, but it will also help improve the quality of research. It should also be noted that the UGC has already required Ph.D. theses on Shodhganga to be submitted through the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for the Award of M.Phil/Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2016, says the notice.
Another thing: The deadline for MPhil and Ph.D. theses to be submitted has been moved up to June 30, 2022. Since the COVID-19 pandemic is still going on and people are getting sick, UGC has decided to give them an extra six months to finish their projects. However, the students who are given a fellowship will not get any more time with the fellowship, and the fellowship will only last for five years.
