Indian Institute of Technology Delhi alumnus Amarjit Bakshi has donated additional one crore rupees to the institute’s Endowment fund. The IIT Delhi Endowment Fund was formed in 2017 after Mr. Amarjit Bakshi made a contribution of Rs. 1 crore. Prof. V Ramgopal Rao was inspired by this idea to begin the Endowment Fund at IIT Delhi.

IIT Delhi’s alumni are distributed across the globe, with a population of 55,000. It’s not uncommon for the school’s alumni to be well-off and well-regarded in their respective fields. Public funds of Rs 550 crores a year are used to support the institute.

He remarked, “It is time that the institute is independent of public funding and all its expenses should be borne by the alumni through the Endowment Fund.” A commitment to pay Rs 10 crores in 2017 prompted him to begin with a one-time contribution of Rs 1 crore in 2017. He’s already donated Rs 4 crores, and that’s only so far.

People have started to give back because of Prof Rao’s inspiring actions, says Mr. Bakshi. Another IIT alumnus, Mr. Anant Yardi, just gave USD 10 million.

‘IIT Delhi prides itself on its world-class professors and alumni who have distinguished themselves in many fields,’ stated Prof V Ramgopal Rao, Director of IIT Delhi. When our alumni recognize their Institute and its research, we are grateful to Mr. Amarjit Bakshi for his generosity and support to his Alma Mater.”
