Prominent Theoretical Physicist from IISER Pune Among Padma Bhushan Awardees in Maharashtra

Theoretical physicist Deepak Dhar, emeritus professor for physics at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, was among the nine Padma Bhushan awardees in the state of Maharashtra this year.

Dhar is the first Indian to receive the coveted Boltzmann Medal in 2022. Other notable awardees include Ustad Zakir Hussain, who was awarded a Padma Vibhushan, and industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla and singer Suman Kalyanpur, who were given the Padma Bhushan.

Investor Rakesh Jhunjhuwala, social worker Gajanan Mane, activist Ramesh Patange, actress Ravina Tandon and conductor Coomi Wadia were the other Padma Shri awardees. Jhunjhunwala was given the award posthumously. Dhar expressed his excitement about the award, stating that it was a great honor and that he had no prior knowledge of it until he received a call from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Singer Suman Kalyanpur had a difficult start to the day as her apartment building caught fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning. However, the announcement of her Padma Bhushan award came as a welcome relief. Actress Raveena Tandon took to social media to express her gratitude for the Padma Shri award, acknowledging the impact it would have on her contributions to the film industry and beyond.

Other awardees include Bhikuji alias Dada Idate, who started an ashramshala several decades ago and has dedicated his life to working for the marginalized section of society. Parshuram Khune, a Padma Shri recipient, has dedicated his award to the fans of zadipatti theatre, a form of theatre unique to Vidarbha. Octogenarian Prabhakar Mande, also a Padma Shri awardee, has written over 50 books and started a foundation for conserving and promoting scattered folk literature.
