An applicant for these positions must have a Ph.D., according to the MoE announcement, which was issued on October 18. As a result, a job announcement for IIT director positions has been made public by the MoE. By the closing date of applications on 6 December 2021, all applicants must be under the age of 60. A team will review the applications before recommending three candidates to the President of India.

Key Highlight:

  • Indian Institutes of Technology’s (IITs) new directors will be chosen by MoE.
  • Between 2015 and 2016, all of these institutions were founded.
  • An applicant for these positions must have a Ph.D., according to the MoE announcement.
  • By the closing date of applications on 6 December 2021, all applicants must be under the age of 60.
  • A team will review the applications before recommending three candidates to the President of India.
  • There will be three finalists for each institute, and the President will make the final decision.
  • According to reliable sources, the search has begun early due to recent delays in the appointment of IIT directors.
  • Although the government published an advertisement for the position in November of last year, no one has yet been appointed.

This year’s IITs in Dharwad, Goa, Palakkad, Jammu, Bhilai, and Tirupati have all began their hunt for new directors with the help of the Ministry of Education (MoE). All of these institutions were founded in the years 2015-2016.

On Monday, it was announced that the present directors’ terms are set to expire in five to eight months. In most cases, the ministry makes an announcement about a director’s impending departure three to four months before it actually happens.

According to reliable sources, the search has begun early due to recent delays in the appointment of IIT directors. Unlike IIT Jammu, where the search for a new director begins eight months before the current director’s term expires, the search for the other three institutes takes place over the course of five months.

The current director of IIT Jammu, Manoj Singh Gaur, began his duties in June 2017 and will leave the institution in June 2022 after serving a four-year term. In March 2017, BK Mishra became the director of IIT Goa. In March 2022, he’ll step down from his position as IIT Bhilai and IIT Dharwad director. Directors of IIT Tirupati and IIT Palakkad, who began in January 2017 and will leave office in the next three months, are K.N. Satyanarayana and P.B. Sunil Kumar, respectively.

Until this news was published, ThePrint emailed the ministry’s official spokeswoman for a comment on the development. There was no answer.

There is still time to apply as the deadline is on December 6th.

A Ph.D. with a first class or equivalent in the previous degree, ideally in an engineering discipline, was required in the MoE advertisement posted on October 18th.

“Candidates with degrees in science, mathematics, or management may be taken into account in certain extraordinary circumstances…. An outstanding academic record and at least 10 years of teaching experience in an esteemed engineering or technology institute or university are required, as well as having mentored PhD candidates “the text of the post stated.

Candidates should be under 60 years of age when their application is due on December 6, 2021. A panel will then review the submissions before a final decision is made.

There will be three finalists for each institute, and the President of India’s office will make the final decision.

The appointment process is slow

Director appointments at IIT have been extremely delayed recently, according to a source who spoke to ThePrint.

“Since last year, neither IIT Indore nor IIT Mandi has had a full-time director. In April 2021, the director’s tenure at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi expired; however, he continues to serve under an extension. Because of all these cases, the administration is eager to get the process underway as soon as possible, “according to the source.

IIT Patna and IIT Bhubaneswar both experienced appointment delays recently.

In September of this year, the previous full-time director of IIT Patna, Pushpak Bhattacharya, stepped down from his position in June 2020 and was replaced by T.N. Singh.

In April 2020, the current director, Prof. R.V. Rajakumar, will complete a five-year term as director of IIT Bhubaneswar. Although the government published an advertisement for the position in November of last year, no one has yet been appointed.

It began in December 2020 for the MoE under former minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ to appoint directors at IIT Indore and IIT Mandi, both of which are now without full-time directors. Sources claim that the ministry had already finished one round of the selection process before scrapping it and starting the process over.
