Atreyee Kundu, a DST INSPIRE faculty fellow, has developed scheduling and control algorithms for networked control systems with limited communication capacity and a high probability of data loss.

The paper, co-authored with Prof. Daniel Quevedo of the Queensland University of Technology in Australia and accepted for publication in the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems, examines systems in which multiple devices access a wireless network with limited capacity and a high probability of data loss. It proposes algorithms for the sequence in which devices can be granted network access and control inputs that can be applied to ensure that al.

Dr. Kundu is currently working on building new sets of decision and control algorithms to assist society in maximizing the benefits of technology in various fields such as health, education, and drone flying. She is currently working on the development of decision and control algorithms for networked control systems. She analyzes strategies and synthesizes algorithms using a hybrid dynamical systems approach and discrete mathematics. The numerically tractable algorithms she has devised are particularly beneficial in scenarios such as smart homes, smart cities, groups of robots performing a specific task, and platoons of autonomous vehicles. It is frequently necessary for the process and control algorithm to be geographically separated in modern engineering systems. For instance, a remote surgery in which the doctor and patient are in separate locations, a flying drone controlled by a ground PC, platoons of autonomous autos patrolling the roads, and so forth. The process and control algorithm communicate over a shared wireless communication network, which we refer to as a Networked Control System. Due to communication constraints and uncertainties, the real-time feedback control loops found in networked control systems are distinct from those in classic feedback control systems. Naturally, novel decision and control algorithms are a critical requirement for modern engineering, which is what I design as a DST INSPIRE faculty member,” Dr. Kundu explained.

Her research is critical to a broad class of modern engineering systems. It serves every segment of society through various sectors such as healthcare disaster management governance, administration, etc.

Dr. Kundu has developed methods for stabilizing, scheduling, and controlling networked control systems subject to communication constraints and uncertainties. Her research in the fields of networked control and cyber-physical systems can make modern technical capabilities such as telesurgery and autonomous vehicles more accessible to the general public in the long run.
