Experts addressed electric vehicle R&D needs and developed a road map for electric vehicle technologies

The Indian economy would need to be a lot less carbon-based by 2070 to be carbon neutral. It will be very important for transportation to go electric and use green hydrogen. A complete technology plan is needed that includes developing battery systems that are right for the job.

The Director of ARCI came up with a detailed plan for technology development in India for all parts of electric cars. Around 200 people from ministries, R&D labs, academia, and industry came to the meeting. The goal of the meeting was to figure out how to meet the goal set by the Government to make a big shift to electric mobility.

Key Highlight:

  • An expert panel discussed the R&D needs of electric vehicles and mapped out a road map for electric vehicle technology.
  • The DST hosted the day-long brainstorming workshop on April 20, 2022, by Dr. Akhilesh Gupta.
  • Prof. Karthick Athmanathan, IIT Madras, presented a comprehensive road map for technology development in India for various electric vehicle components, from basic research to applied research, application, engineering, and industrialization.
  • The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has helped develop the full set of Indian Standards required for EV Charging Infrastructure, and recently contributed the draft standards for Battery as a Service (also known as Battery Swapping) for Light EVs like scooters and autorickshaws, according to Mr. Sajid Mubashir, Scientist DST.
  • An audience of almost 200 stakeholders from ministries, R&D labs, academia and industry, discussed the need to focus on EV subsystems such as batteries, motors, and power electronics to meet the Government’s 30% electric vehicle population by 2030.

At a brainstorming session, experts talked about electric cars’ research and development needs. They also came up with a road map for electric vehicle technologies.

For India to be carbon neutral by 2070, it would need to de-carbonize the economy a lot in many different ways in many different places. The Department of Science and Technology’s senior advisor said that transportation is one area where electric cars and green hydrogen will play a big role in making the world a better place (DST). People from many different groups came to the meeting, and he said that DST has already done a lot to encourage research into electric vehicles in the last few years. Need to keep going with this kind of work:

Department of Science and Technology (DST) held a brainstorming session on April 20, 2022. Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, who was in charge, was in charge of the day-long session.

A complete technology plan is needed to ensure that battery systems like a solid-state batteries can withstand the high temperatures in tropical areas. Because of the wide range of activities that need to be done and flexibility in program management, there is a need to organize research programs as special purpose vehicles that can work with many different industries and academic institutions, said Dr. K Balasubramanian, Director of the NFTDC.

Dr. Tata Narasingha Rao, the Director of ARCI, looked at the different parts of the electric car battery and the assembly and manufacturing processes that make them safe so that fires don’t happen. He also talked about what to do right away to make sure the battery pack was high quality and safety.

Prof. Karthick Athmanathan from IIT Madras presented a detailed plan for developing electric vehicle technology in India. He said that because of the wide range of electric vehicle platforms and models available in India, there is a chance to work at all levels and gain many technical skills.

DST has made many important contributions to the Indian Government’s efforts to get more people to use electric cars. Sajid Mubashir, a scientist with DST, talked about the department’s work on electric car charging infrastructure and on Battery swapping for electric scooters and autorickshaws, which is also called battery swapping.

Around 200 people from ministries, R&D labs, academia, and industry took part in the meeting. They talked about getting better at the major EV subsystems, like the Battery, motor, and power electronics. They also talked about meeting the Government’s goal of having 30% of all vehicles be electric by 2030.
