IIT-Delhi Director explained why Indian Universities are losing top international ranking

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has maintained its position as one of the world’s leading engineering and technology schools. Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are losing out on international rankings because they primarily focus on engineering, according to the Director of IIT Delhi, V Ramgopal Rao.

Key Highlight:

  • Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are losing out on international rankings because they primarily focus on engineering.
  • International rankings call for a greater emphasis on multidisciplinary training.
  • This year, IIT Delhi has added five new BTech programs, eight MTech degrees, and two MSc programs to its list of offerings.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is still one of the world’s top 200 engineering and technology schools. Still, it has failed to gain prominence in international university rankings like those published by QS and Times Higher Education.

International rankings are being harmed by IITs focusing solely on engineering, claims Director of IIT Delhi V Ramgopal Rao (VRR).

Engineering and technology rankings are rising, but it will take time for us to go up in the world university rankings. In comparison to other international universities, particularly those in the United States, we are not thorough enough,” he explained.

“If we compare an IIT with Stanford, we are going to lose because the US institution has several schools, such as for law, medicine, and so on,” he said. International rankings call for a greater emphasis on multidisciplinary training.

The institute has opened ten new academic departments to broaden its educational offerings to include mo re disciplines in the last six years. This year, IIT Delhi has added five new BTech programs, eight MTech degrees, and two MSc programs to its list of offerings.

From the following year forward, students will enroll in a bachelor’s degree program in Design. Additional degrees in Design will be offered in the following few years, Rao said.
